Then then Benjamin has some tips for you.  I’m a believer in meditation, I just don’t do it.  I’ve ‘tried’ but it’s not my thing. I’d rather go for a long walk, breath for a few moments, stare at the stars. And guess what, this might, given a bit of a stretch, qualify as meditation.

Staring at the stars wouldn’t be the standard definition  of course, but if you need a quick way to relax when your daughter won’t get out of bed and she is late for school and you are late for an important meeting with a client and you wanted to leave early to have time to find the place and now it’s snowing and it’s going to make you later and I can feel my blood pressure rising with every word I type.

And that’s just what Benjamin has me do on this interview!

About the Book

At first glance, Gardening in the Dark is a love story between two people finding themselves at a critical turning point in their lives. Beyond this, it is a novel which deals with the much darker issues of learning to live with Bipolar Disorder, overcoming the legacy left behind by an abusive and difficult childhood, and the journey of awakening and self-realization which comes as the main character, Alex, makes the decision to throw of the shackles of the past and choose to live.

The book is at times humorous, at times tragic, but always optimistic about the strength we each of us have within us to survive incredible challenges and become the person whom we always wished to be.

About the Author

Jennifer Syrkiewicz has overcome a number of obstacles within her own life in order to find happiness, and Gardening is a partly confessional tale which mirrors her own journey. As a survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse, the daughter of an alcoholic mother and someone who subsequently was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, we could be forgiven for assuming that Jennifer was destined to become a depressive person, overcome by the traumatic experiences which she went through.

This is anything but the case. Described as an inspiration by those who come in to contact with her, Jennifer has taken these experiences and used them to forge her own unique brand of optimism, ultimately bringing a message of hope to people who have gone through similar experiences.

As the founder of the first support group for Bipolar in her home town in the UK, Jennifer’s mission is to spread the message that we each have the power to achieve our dreams, and the inner strength to find happiness. There is nothing which can’t be overcome, and Jennifer firmly believes that life is kind, humanity is phenomenal, and each of us can do, and be, anything which we set our minds to.
